Travel documents
Your travel documents, including a passport and Visa, are also required during border crossing
within the East African region. For the passport, ensure that it is valid for 6 months and has at least
two blank pages.
East African Nationals/Citizens typically don’t need Visas for short stays in any of the East African
member States (for up to 90 days). However, Visa requirements change from time to time, hence it
is important to always check the latest updates before traveling. For children under 18 years, it is
advisable to carry a birth certificate, and if crossing the border alone or with only one parent, it is
advisable to have a letter from the absent parent.
2. An International Driver’s license
Much as it is not always compulsory, it is advisable for every traveler driving in a foreign country,
including the East African region, to have an international driver’s license.
3. Letter of Authority
If you plan on crossing the East African borders in/a rented vehicle, it is recommended to have a
letter from the Rental Agency/Company providing permission to take the safari vehicle out of the
country. Interestingly, you don’t require a police clearance for this.
4. Vehicle registration documentation
Another border crossing essential in East Africa is the original vehicle registration papers that include
the logbook (at least a certified photocopy). For safari vehicles that are financed, the Car rental
Agency will also provide a letter of Authority from the Bank, including the dates of travel.
Additionally, a proof of comprehensive vehicle insurance that is valid in the destination country is
required. Ensure that the safari Vehicle is insured before you cross the border with it, with a valid
sticker displayed on the safari vehicle as proof of insurance.

region. This should be placed on the rear of the safari vehicle in a visible position, at least 150mm
from the Vehicle registration plate.
